Ponnumthuruthu Island
Located 20km from Varkala, the island’s name means ‘golden island’. This pristine island is reachable by boat from Nedunganda village. The island is home to rare migratory birds and natives birds such as egrets, cormorants and herons, and a few gulls. This six-acre island is a nice place to go for boating and bird-watching.

The 100-year-old Siva-Parvathi Temple, which was rebuilt a decade ago, is the only inhabited area. The whole island comes under temple property. The temple is open on all mornings and evenings, and belongs to the Valiyapurackal family. It is also known as Ponnumthuruthu Siva Temple. During the famous Sivarathri festival, the island comes alive with people.

The area near the Nedunganda Lake is known for coir manufacturing. Tourists can see coir-making units around here. You can see how coir is made from coconut husks. The area around Anchuthengu Kayal provides for some calm evening walks.
