Sree Janardhana Swami Temple
The 2,000-year-old temple overlooks the Papanasam Beach. There are many mineral springs close by that are the main attractions of this place. Sree Janardhana Swami is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. You can find an old bell here, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel which sank near Varkala ages ago.
The original Vaishnavite temple was destroyed by waves. But many years later, a Pandyan king, who came here to undergo penance for his sins, built the current one. Lord Brahma, after pardoning him, asked him to construct a temple on the same site. According to legends, the king dreamt of the exact location of the original idol lying deep in the sea. He reinstalled the idol after reclaiming it with the help of some fishermen. Also, it was Lord Brahma who did the rituals after the idol was reinstalled.
