Varkala Tunnel
Fondly called Varkala Thuruthu, it was built during the reign of Maharaja Ayilyam Tirunal. The tunnel’s construction work had begun in 1867 under the supervision of Divan T. Madhava Rao, and was completed in 1880, at the time of Divan Sheshaya Sasthri of Travancore.

The five-metre-wide tunnels were navigable till 50 years ago, and connected Trivandrum and Tirur. Some parts of the tunnel are still navigable. The government has set aside resources to dredge and widen it in order to extend the waterways.
